  • Caramel Color Cancer - Caramel Coloring in Beverages Increases Risk of Cancer

Caramel Color Cancer in soda and sweet teasArtificial caramel color is added to many dark color soda cola and tea drinks. During the manufacturing of beverages 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI) a carcinogen is formed. Natural brewed tea does not have 4-MEI.

California law states that beverages exposing people to more than 29ug 4-MEI/day must carry warning labels stating such. Consuming 29ug MEI/day or more causes a new case of cancer in 100,000 poeple. New York does not require MEI/day labeling.

Researchers evaluated 4-MEI levels in 12 caramel color soda cola beverages in California and New York to see if labeling reduces what manufacturers allow in their products.

Caramel colored sodas in California typically had lower levels of the carcinogen 4-MEI compared to New York. The labeling requirement apparently forces manufactures to be more cautious in their soda manufacturing process. The researchers recommended that the federal government pass and enforce laws requiring 4-MEI labeling on beverages.

Malta Goya had the highest 4-MEI concentration (916.8 to 963.3ug/L)
Pepsi had a high concentration (78.4 to 501.5ug/L)
A&W Root Beer had a moderate concentration (65ug/L)
Dr. Pepper had low concentration (27.5 to 28.0ug/L)
Coca-Cola had the lowest 4-MEI concentration (9.5 to 11.7ug/L)

Caramel coloring is not limited to sodas. Brisk Lemon Iced Tea had a moderate concentration (46.5ug/L). Potentially any manufactured beverage, and many foods with Caramel Coloring may have 4-MEI and contribute to the development of cancer.

The research found routine consumption of certain soda caramel color beverages can result in 4-MEI exposure greater than the 29ug/day.

Natural Cancer Treatment Pearl:

Read your ingredient labels on all foods and beverages. If caramel color or artificial caramel color is listed on the ingredient list don't consume it.
