EGCG and Triple Negative Breast Cancer

 

EGCG (Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate), the major active component of green tea, has anti-cancer effect on breast cancer cells.

 

EGCG and Triple Negative Breast Cancer subdues cancer growthResearchers exposed triple negative breast cancer cells to EGCG. They found EGCG subdues the growth, metastasis and spreading of triple negative breast cancer cells by decreasing blood vessel growth to breast cancer cells and tumors. The anti-cancer effect was seen at 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment. [1] 

 

The same researchers previously found EGCG caused significant death of triple negative breast cancer cells at 48 and 72 hours after treatment in their laboratory. EGCG upregulated 18 and down regulated 4 cancer growth genes including BAG3, XIAP, RIPKS. These genes may be associated with resistance to cancer treatment. [2]

 

High doses work better than low doses of EGCG in treating triple negative breast cancer. High doses caused oxidative damage, similar to chemotherapy drugs. [3] 

 

At the time of publication, the amount of EGCG and triple negative breast cancer research is limited due to 2 facts: 

  1. Triple negative breast cancer is not common, even though is may be a problem for you. Since it is not at common researchers can not get as much money.  
  2. EGCG is an inexpensive natural product and financially cannot be developed for prescription drug use.

Newer breast cancer research is finding combining curcumin with EGCG enhances the effectiveness of the natural treatments in preventing cancer stem cell growth [4] although the combination has not been tested in triple negative breast cancer.
